In this masterclass, cybersecurity expert Dr Christopher Nehring explores the evolving landscape of political cyberattacks targeting parties, institutions, election campaigns, and democratic processes against the backdrop of the ongoing hybrid war in Europe. 

Drawing on frontline insights and lessons learned from Ukraine, Dr Nehring will unpack concrete examples and attacker TTPs that have shaped modern conflict, illustrating how state and non-state actors blend digital intrusions with broader hybrid operations. 

Participants will be guided through today’s spectrum of political cyber operations: from DDoS disruptions and classic CNE intrusions (“hacks”) to ransomware, political supply-chain compromises, and cyber influence attacks such as hack-and-leak operations. Special attention will be given to the AI factor, i.e. how generative AI has accelerated attacker capabilities, lowered entry barriers, and reshaped the tactics used against political actors. 

This session offers a rare, structured view into how political cyberattacks are planned, executed, and integrated into wider hybrid strategies. Attendees will leave with clear lessons learned for strengthening political cybersecurity, sharper awareness of emerging risks, and a practical understanding of how democratic organisations can build resilience and prepare before an attack occurs.
